Quickly read the text, were you correct? Michelangelo di Lodovico Bounarroti Simoni or more popularly known as Michelangelo is one of the most popular artists in history. He is one of the best artists of the Renaissance period along with Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, a day celebrated in some countries as Michelangelo Day. There is much to be learned about Michelangelo and his works. He is a gifted sculptor and an equally gifted painter. He has excelled in the many fields he studied in. His most famous sculpted works are the marble sculpture of David and the marble statues of Mary holding the body of Christ after His crucifixion called Pieta. His famous painted works can be found at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. They are scenes from the Book of Genesis. The most well-known scene is entitled The Creation of Adam. Another of his famous works in the chapel is The Last Judgment. Although there was much censorship about Michelangelo and his works, he remained a very popular artist and architect. Michelangelo has many other famous works which were commissioned by various patrons which can be seen in many museums in Italy. He was also assigned part of the design for St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, notably its dome. Michelangelo passed away in Rome at the age of 88 but was buried at the Basilica di Santa Croce in his home province of Tuscany.
