Reviews from Teachers:

Ms. Alix Johnson (Halifax) previous teacher at Jeff’s English in Ulsan)

Jeff’s English is an English academy that provides a good learning atmosphere for the students as well as a good working atmosphere for its teachers. Adequate training is provided for new teachers during training days, so there’s no need to be nervous or feel unprepared. The staff is small, welcoming, always available and willing to answer any questions. Each class has a Korean and a foreigner teacher who will work together as a team, so you’ll never have to feel alone. There are many upsides to having an American boss. Everything is very straightforward and there are no miscommunications. No need to worry about the contract being not followed, everything can be trusted.

Ulsan as a city is great. There are many foreigners and always lots of events and sports to get involved in. Jeff’s English teachers have 2 bedroom apartments, with a kitchen, bathroom and living room. Many other teachers living in Korea have only a bachelor apartment, so we are very lucky. The walking distance from the apartments to the academy is only a twenty-minute walk. Within a five-minute walk there are 3 grocery stores, bus stops and some restaurants. Within a fifteen-minute walk there are many more grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, banks etc.

With lots of time to travel, I’ve not only seen different parts of Korea but also Japan, Philippines, China and soon Thailand. Working at Jeff’s English and living in Korea has been an excellent experience.

Ms. Amanda J (from Toronto) previously worked at this English School

To whom it may concern,

My name is Amanda and I have been working for at this English in Ulsan, South Korea for 9 months. I feel like I completely lucked out in my placement and just wish that other people were as lucky. I had originally told Garnet that the most important thing for me in finding a place was security. I wanted to make sure I was one of the people that had an amazing time in Korea and had heard horror stories about bosses and locations, pay etc. Jeff's is one of the best placements I have heard of in the past 9 months.

Because Jeff is from the States, a lot of the issues that you may run into while being abroad are eliminated. Jeff is very helpful, very patient and understanding. Any concerns or difficulties are always quickly addressed.

This year I was fortunate enough to be a part of Jeff's English when they moved from a three room Hagwon to a brand new 7 room Hagwon. It’s beautiful, located at the top of this hill with huge windows in every classroom. It really nice to be able to see the outside throughout the day of teaching, not to mention the sunsets are spectacular!!

Classroom sizes are kept to a minimum with a maximum of 10 students and the curriculum is very well set out, so as a new teacher it was very easy for me to learn what Jeff and his wife Julia wanted me to do with the kids. Although there is a set curriculum a few days a week you have space to introduce your own ideas and exercises to practice the lessons. Jeff encourages you to come up with games and other interactive methods to practice English with the students.

Unlike other Hagwon's Jeff's is a conversational Hagwon so a lot of the curriculum focuses on conversation, pronunciation, etc. The Korean teacher that you work in tandem with teaches most of the grammar, and your job is to focus on the spoken side of the English language.

In my experience, I feel that the students here are far more advanced than a lot of the students I have met, not to mention very well behaved.

As for where I live, I live on the outskirts of Ulsan, its not downtown, and probably about a 20minute cab ride or hour long bus ride to downtown. But, I love it, taxis and buses are very cheap, and the view from my balcony is exceptional. I have a 2 bedroom apartment all to myself, which is pretty amazing if you think that most teachers in Korea have bachelor apartments.

Anyways, on a final note I feel that anyone who gets this placement is pretty lucky, especially as their first position in Korea. I would stay here, but I'm heading out to travel.

Mr. Mitch B - finished at end of July/Aug 2009 (from Halifax).

I am a recent grad of Dalhousie University who decided to come to South Korea to teach English. With the help of Canada-esl.com, a recruiting company owned by (former) Dalhousie student and Halifax resident Garnet Brooks, I found and received a great job that fit all of my requests. Garnet is a very personable and honest recruiter who spent 8 years teaching in Korea himself before coming back to Halifax. He was more than willing to meet me on campus and even downtown at any time, and answered all of my questions about moving to another country. He found the job for me, set up the interview and helped me with all of the documents that were required to make the move. Having a recruiter like Canada-ESL.com is a huge help as it ensures that you get all of the information you need and fast. This is important so that nothing gets lost in translation as every little detail is important when you are moving to a foreign country.

As for South Korea, it has been a great experience for me so far. It really has something to offer to anyone looking to explore and try something new while getting paid a good salary at the same time. Korea is a beautiful country with mountains and ocean surrounding most cities. Travelling in and

out of Korea is much cheaper and more efficient than in Canada, so it is possible to go exploring as often as you want.

If you are an athlete it is also easy to keep up with playing and watching sports while in Korea. There are pro teams here to watch, and also local foreign owned bars often will play games from back home, especially come playoff time. As for playing sports you can pretty much find people to play anything, and there are also organized teams for soccer and other sports as well depending on which city you are in.

Although there is some obvious culture shock in moving to a new country, the people here are very friendly and always willing to help out. Also the foreign population of English teachers is very large and growing all the time so it is a great opportunity to meet not only Koreans but fellow English people from all over the world. Although exploring Korean night life is great, there are also several foreign owned or foreign friendly bars that are frequented by the English teachers of that particular city.
