Fun / Funny

Though they have very similar meanings use ‘fun’ to describe something that was enjoyable or humorous. Use ‘funny’ to describe something that made you laugh or is strange or out of the ordinary.

Playing soccer is fun, but I would not say it was funny.
A joke is funny, not fun.
Jim Carrey is funny. (makes me laugh)
There’s something funny (strange) about that man. I don’t trust him.
There is something funny (out of the ordinary) about Jenny today, I wonder what happened last night with her and Jim.

Notice the small difference between funny and fun in the following dialogue.
A: What’s your new boyfriend like?
B: He is so funny. He always makes me laugh. That’s why I love to be around him.
A: What do you usually do together?
B: We usually talk, go to the movies, go out to eat. Sometimes we go bowling or play pool, we always have fun.

Q: When was the last time you had some fun?
A: When I hung out* with my friends last weekend, we had so much fun. We went to Disneyland.
To hang out with someone is to spend time with them.
