HOW TO WRITE A CHECK
Learn how to write a check.
This worksheet provides sudents with a fun and practical way to understand how to write a check. Some people may say that check writing is out-dated in this day and age, however, the reality is that many North Americans still write checks everyday and every month. Learning how to write a check is very important for anyone who plans to travel to and stay in Canada or the United States to study English.
You have to write a check to pay your monthly rent of your apartment. In that case, you will normally require post-dated checks.
A post-dated check is a check which you put a future date on it, in order that it will be cashed later. For example, when you rent an apartment, your landlord will usually ask you to give 12 post-dated checks in order to cover the year. In this case you would write in the amount of the check, sign the check and date each check for a different month (such as January 1 (+ year), February 1, (+ year), March 1, (+ year), etc. Those would be post dated checks.
Cashing a check. - once you write a check and give it to the other person for payment, the other person will cash it. To cash a check means that the other person you gave it to will take it to their bank and ask the bank to change it into cash money. Sometimes there is a holding perion while the check is going through the check clearing process.
A check clears when yuor bank receives the check and takes the money out of your account to satisfy the money paid to the person you gave the check to, who then cashed it. If your account doesn't have enough money, your check will bounce, unless you have 'overdraft protection'.
Another important reason you must learn to write a check is if you own a business. Business people typically pay suppliers, bills and expenses with checks in order to be able to track the money which goes out of the business bank account.
You must also know how to endorse a check. To endorse a check simply means to sign it, as is done below. Your signature / endorosement, is what makes the check valid. It cannot be cashed unless it is endorsed. If someone other than the account holder endorses your check it may be a forged signature and could be a federal crime.
